Winter 10 Day Stay
Ideas for trips in the winter time in and around Chata Janka in Hlobišov.

Just 50 km from the cottage, Kráľova hoľa remains one of Slovakia’s most famous and recognisable mountain peaks. Covered in snow, it becomes a well known destination for ski-alpinism and winter mountain touring, offering wide open terrain and a true high mountain feel.
The summit is easily identified by its iconic radio transmitter and rewards visitors with vast winter views across the Low Tatras and, on clear days, towards the High Tatras. Marked winter routes allow for safe ascents on skis or on foot, while guided tours and local equipment rental make the experience accessible even for those new to ski-alpinism.

There are several routes to reach Dedečkova chata, a traditional mountain hut set in the forests of the Low Tatras, but we recommend the trail starting at Bystrianska jaskyňa. This pleasant, child-friendly walk takes around 1 hour 30 minutes one way and gradually climbs through woodland, offering lovely views along the ascent.
The hut is open all year round and is a popular stop for walkers and families, serving traditional Slovak food in a cosy mountain setting, making it an ideal place to rest and enjoy a meal before heading back. In winter, the route is also used for ski-alpinism, with the hut providing a natural destination for a rewarding day out on skis. As opening times can vary outside the main season or in bad weather, it is worth checking ahead before setting off.

A visit to Zbojská combines gentle walking, wide views, and traditional Slovak food. The Zbojská Shepherd’s Hut sits alongside a modern lookout tower, both easily reached by a short and pleasant walk across the Muránska planina plateau.
From the top of the observation tower, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding forests, plateaus, and distant peaks. After the walk, the traditional shepards hut is an ideal place to stop for a meal, serving classic Slovak dishes such as bryndzové halušky in a relaxed mountain setting. This makes Zbojská a great half day trip that combines light activity, local cuisine, and beautiful open landscapes.

If you are visiting at the right time of year, you may be lucky enough to experience the markets in Brezno town centre. These traditional Slovak markets take place in the main square and bring the town to life with stalls selling local food, sweet treats, traditional clothing, handmade ornaments, and seasonal goods.
The markets offer a great opportunity to experience local culture, pick up unique souvenirs, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of Brezno’s historic centre, making them a lovely addition to a relaxed afternoon in town during a longer stay.

A day trip to Banská Bystrica offers a great mix of history, culture, and shopping. A highlight of the visit is the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising, which provides an engaging insight into Slovakia’s modern history and is well worth a visit.
After the museum, spend time exploring the historic town centre, where the main square is lined with colourful buildings, cafés, and shops. Visit the central square and the church, enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants, or stop for coffee while taking in the atmosphere of this lively city. To finish the day, head to Europa Shopping Center, offering a wide range of shops, restaurants, and refreshments before returning to the cottage.

Thanks to its central location in Slovakia’s mountain region, the cottage is ideally placed for winter skiing with family and children. Several ski resorts are within easy driving distance, offering a mix of gentle beginner slopes, family friendly areas, and larger resorts for more confident skiers.
The closest ski area is just 100 metres from the cottage, offering true ski-in, ski-out access for easy and relaxed days on the slopes. A fun and relaxed day out can be spent at the ice rink in Brezno, which is suitable for both adults and children. Skating sessions are well organised and the rink is a popular local spot, especially during the winter months.
Please note that skate boots are not available to hire directly at the rink, so visitors should bring their own skates or arrange to borrow or hire them elsewhere in advance. Opening times and public skating sessions can vary, so it is recommended to check the official ice rink website before visiting.
After skating, you can continue the day at the nearby retail park, where there is a coffee shop and a selection of general stores as well as a gym with a large outdoor children’s soft play area, making this a great option for families looking to combine light activity with time to relax.

The area around the cottage is ideal for cross-country skiing, with a wide selection of groomed trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. These routes are suitable for families, beginners, and more experienced skiers looking for longer half-day or full-day outings through nearby valleys and ridges.
The well known Osrblie Biathlon Centre is only a short drive away and offers professionally maintained trails in a beautiful forest setting. With many locations accessible within around 30 minutes, the region provides excellent variety throughout the winter season. A ride on the Čiernohorská železnica makes an easy and enjoyable half day trip, starting in Hronec. From here, the historic narrow gauge steam train travels through the forests of the Čierny Hron valley towards Čierny Balog, before returning back the same way.
One of the highlights of the journey is the famous section where the train passes directly through a football pitch, running between the spectator stands, a truly unique and memorable experience.
After the train ride, you can continue the day with a walk or head on to the nearby town of Brezno for an afternoon visit. Here you can visit the local museum, climb the bell tower, stroll around the historic square, and choose from several restaurants and cafés for a relaxed lunch or coffee before heading back to the cottage.
