A lovely summer day trip is a visit to nearby town Brezno's lookout tower, combined with an easy walk along the educational nature trail.
The 40 metre high observation tower offers wide panoramic views over Brezno and the surrounding Horehronie countryside, while the gentle circular trail provides a relaxed walk through green surroundings, ideal for families and casual walkers.

Just 50 km from the cottage, Kráľova hoľa is one of Slovakia’s most famous and recognisable mountain peaks, making it an ideal day trip for lovers of nature and wide open landscapes. From the summit, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views stretching across the Low Tatras and, on clear days, towards the High Tatras.
The peak is also known for its iconic radio transmitter, which marks the summit and makes it easily identifiable from afar. Well maintained trails allow guests to hike at a comfortable pace or hire e-bikes to explore the area with ease.

Start the day with a visit to Bystrianska jaskyňa, Horehronie’s most significant cave and a fascinating half day family experience. The 45 minute guided tour leads through impressive underground spaces filled with striking rock formations and sinter deposits, while also including a small partisan history memorial. The cave is suitable for all ages and is open Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays closed.
Once the cave tour is complete, continue the day with a scenic hike to Dedečkova chata, starting directly from the cave area. This pleasant, child friendly trail takes around 1 hour 30 minutes one way and offers gentle ascent with lovely views along the route. The mountain hut is open year round and serves traditional Slovak cuisine, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy lunch before heading back. As opening times can vary outside the main season or in bad weather, it is worth checking their website in advance.

Dedeckova Chata Website:

Although a little further from the cottage, the village of Dedinky is well worth the visit in the summer months. Set beside a man made lake, the village offers a relaxed atmosphere surrounded by mountain scenery.
From Dedinky, visitors can take the old cable car up into the hills above the village, for hikes leading to spectacular viewpoints. On a clear day, the views stretch across both the High and Low Tatras, as well as down towards the lake and village below. After the walk, head back down to enjoy time by the water, with spots for sunbathing, swimming, and affordable paddle boat hire on the lake.
The village offers a good choice of places to eat, including a pizzeria and restaurants serving traditional Slovak dishes.

Start the day in Hronec with a ride on these lightweight, pedal powered rail trolleys which run along the historic narrow gauge forestry railway from Hronec to Čierny Balog. The trip passes through the beautiful forests and karst landscapes of the Hrončianska dolina. One section even takes you straight through a football stadium between the spectator stands, making it a truly one of a kind experience.
Once you arrive in Čierny Balog, continue the day with a relaxed walk through the forests of Vydrovo at the Lesnícky skanzen Vydrovo. It includes an open air forest museum follows an educational national trail and features traditional wooden buildings, forestry exhibits, floating rock formations, a small wooden chapel, and sections of the historic forest railway.
After the walk, stop for traditional Slovak food and refreshments at the on site restaurant before returning to Hronec by cyclodrezina.

A scenic and easy walk leads from Hotel Partizán Tále to the reservoir, making it ideal for a gentle morning stroll even with children.
Once there, spend the rest of the day swimming, sunbathing on the grassy shores, or simply relaxing by the lake surrounded by forested hills. With calm water and easy access, Krpáčovo is well suited for families looking to mix light activity with long, laid-back summer afternoons by the water.

Hiking in the Low Tatras National Park offers huge variety, with routes accessible both directly from nearby villages and from the main national park areas.
From places such as Tále, hikers can follow well marked trails that gradually lead into the Low Tatras, making it easy to enjoy mountain walks close to the cottage.
For those wanting to reach the heart of the national park more quickly, the main hiking areas around peaks such as Chopok and Ďumbier are only around 30 minutes away by car. These areas offer convenient parking right next to trailheads, as well as cable cars and chairlifts for those who prefer to combine hiking with easier access to higher elevations.
With countless routes, mountain huts, summit restaurants, and nearby villages all offer places to eat and relax along the way.

A ride on the Čiernohorská železnica makes an easy and enjoyable half day trip, starting in Hronec. From here, the historic narrow gauge steam train travels through the forests of the Čierny Hron valley towards Čierny Balog, before returning back the same way.
One of the highlights of the journey is the famous section where the train passes directly through a football pitch, running between the spectator stands, a truly unique and memorable experience.
After the train ride, you can continue the day with a walk or head on to the nearby town of Brezno for an afternoon visit. Here you can visit the local museum, climb the bell tower, stroll around the historic square, and choose from several restaurants and cafés for a relaxed lunch or coffee before heading back to the cottage.
